The ESM81 is a layer 2 Fast Ethernet Micro Switch that connects up to nine work stations with 10BaseT or 100BaseTX or 100Base FX networks and operates at full wire speed without collisions or discards. The eight RJ45 ports are able to auto negotiate to 10Mbps or 100Mbps full or half duplex The 100FX port has a half/full duplex switch. Extremely small in size and lightweight, it’s very attractive for small business and home office applications (SOHO).

Fast Ethernet was designed in order to ensure cost effective, simple migration from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps maintaining the Ethernet transmission protocol, Carrier Sense Multiple Access Collision Detection (CSMA/CD). Dual speed products offer the ability to leverage your existing network investment of 10 Mbps, the hardware, the software and personal training and blending it with 100 Mbps products on as needed basis as budgets will allow.

The 10/100 dual speed hubs are generally cheaper than 10/100 switches but share the available bandwidth amongst all of the ports. Switches can operate at full band width on each port making them much more efficient.
